Thousands celebrate the Year of the Rabbit during the Lunar New Year parade in Flushing.On Saturday, January 21, thousands of people gathered to watch the annual Lunar New Year parade that brought colorful performances through the bustling city of Flushing.

The community of Flushing bid farewell to the high energy of the Year of the Tiger and welcomed in the peace and hope that symbolizes the Year of the Rabbit. Lunar New Year falls on January 22.

On Saturday, revelers gathered in rabbit ears on the sidewalks of Main Street, while children dressed in traditional Chinese clothing sat on shoulders hoping for the chance to be spotted by a dancing lion or dragon. Organized annually by the Flushing Chinese Business Association and the Lunar New Year Parade Committee, the event featured floats, lion dancers, dragon dance performers and local community groups. Parade participants began the celebration by marching down Union Street before heading up Main Street in front of an enthusiastic audience.Elected officials from the state to the city level gathered on a float to greet the crowd. Countering anti-Asian hatred was a common theme in his messaging.
