2022 has brought a lot of ups and downs for Pakistan in the shortest format of the game. The Man in Green was paradoxically consistent throughout the year, sticking to his mercurial tag.

The Green Shirts played a total of 26 T20s in the year, including the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup. Out of 26 T20Is, Pakistan won 14 and lost 12, including heartbreaking defeats in the finals of both mega events. Let’s take a look at Pakistan’s performance in the T20I format over the last one year.

The only T20I against Australia

Pakistan’s first T20I of 2022 comes against a formidable Australian side on a historic tour of the country. Kangaroos won the match played at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore by defeating the Man in Green by 3 wickets. The Green Shirts looked like a shadow of their former selves as they were unable to trouble the Aussies in favorable home conditions.

Asia Cup 2022

After a disappointing loss to Australia at home, Pakistan traveled to the United Arab Emirates to participate in the 2022 Asia Cup. The men in green had a tough task on their hands as they faced arch-rivals India in their opening match before facing Hong Kong in the group stage of the competition.

The opening match between the arch-rivals was another classic between the two teams but unfortunately for Pakistan, it ended on the losing side as India set a target of 148 for the loss of five wickets with two balls to spare.

Pakistan won their second match in the competition comfortably as they defeated Hong Kong by 155 runs to qualify for the Super Four of the competition. The Super 4 brought out some classics as Pakistan faced India for the second time in the tournament, while also facing Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.

The Green Shirts avenged their defeat in the group stage by defeating India in another thriller. This time Pakistan mastered the run chase as they won the match by five wickets with one ball to spare.

Pakistan’s next match against Afghanistan was even more thrilling as the men in green came from the jaws of defeat. Pakistan faced difficulties as they were bowled out for 9 runs chasing a low target of 130 runs as Afghanistan looked certain to win the match. Chasing 12 off the last over, Naseem Shah shocked the world as he scored back-to-back 2 maximums to help Pakistan win and qualify for the finals of the tournament.

Pakistan faced Sri Lanka in their next two matches, the first in a dead rubber in the Super 4 and the second in the final of the tournament. The Super 4s was won relatively easily by Sri Lanka as they bowled out Pakistan for 121 runs and achieved the target with the loss of five wickets.

The Shaheens tried to avenge their defeat by facing Sri Lanka in the final but ultimately failed as Sri Lanka staged a brilliant comeback to win the match by 26 runs. Pakistan’s dreams of lifting the Asia Cup trophy were dashed as Bhanuka Rajapakse’s sensational innings helped Sri Lanka clinch their sixth Asia Cup title.

England’s T20I tour of Pakistan

After a heartbreaking defeat in the final of the Asia Cup, Pakistan turned their attention to the 2022 T20 World Cup. The men in green host England for a seven-match T20I series in the build-up to the mega event as both teams look to try out new combinations ahead of the tournament.

The two teams fought tooth and nail throughout the series as they played the classic. England won the first match by 5 wickets after which Pakistan leveled the series by 10 wickets. Pakistan lead the series 3-2 before England fought back to win the last two matches of the series to clinch the seven-match series 4-3.

Tri-series in New Zealand

The men in green next travel to New Zealand as they face the Kiwis and Bangladesh in a tri-series to prepare for the 2022 T20 World Cup Down Under. Each team played the other twice in the competition before the top two sides met in the final.

The Green Shirts won both of their matches against Bangladesh, while in the group stage they had to win one and lose one against New Zealand. The Kiwis and Shaheens meet in the final of the tri-series in Christchurch on 14 October.

New Zealand scored 163/7 in their 20 overs thanks to Kane Williamson’s brilliant half-century. Thanks to a solid middle order contribution, Pakistan chased down the target with five wickets and three balls to spare. Mohammad Nawaz was the star of the show with a 22-ball 38 while Hyder Ali and Iftikhar Ahmed played brilliant cameos to help Pakistan lift their spirits ahead of the mega event.

2022 T20 World Cup

The Men in Green looked determined to win their second T20 World Cup title as they headed to Australia after a stunning tri-series win in New Zealand, but it was not going to be an easy task as their opening India was facing in the match. Before facing the likes of South Africa and Bangladesh in the group stage.

Pakistan opened their campaign against India in front of a packed crowd at the Melbourne Cricket Stadium. The highly touted match was an instant classic as both teams battled till the very last ball of the match. India ultimately prevailed thanks to a masterclass from Virat Kohli as he snatched an unlikely victory for the Men in Blue.

The Green Shirts looked to put the heartbreaking loss behind them as they faced Zimbabwe in the next round. While it looked like an easy win on paper, Zimbabwe had other ideas as they shocked the cricketing world by defeating the pre-tournament favorites by one run. The Men in Green were on the brink of elimination and only a miracle could save them.

Pakistan then returned to winning ways as they defeated Holland and followed that up with a thrilling win against South Africa. Pakistan’s hopes of qualifying for the semi-finals rested on the shoulders of the Netherlands as their win against the mighty South Africa would open a door for Pakistan.

The Netherlands caused a massive upset as they beat South Africa while Pakistan won their match against Bangladesh to qualify for the semi-finals, where they faced New Zealand.

Pakistan beat the Kiwis by 7 wickets to book a place in the final against favorites England. Just like in the Asia Cup final, Pakistan suffered another heartbreaking loss as England chased down the target of 138 runs for the loss of 5 wickets with an over to spare.
